How To Mix & Match Prints

Here at Emma Wallace, we love a print that packs a punch. Whether it’s our signature prints that draw inspiration from nature (the butterfly acts as our muse for AW21) or our checks and stripes, we love to layer up looks that draw the eye and look effortlessly chic in the process.

Love a print but not sure how to wear them together? Read on as we show you how to mix and match like a pro!

Start With A Classic

When it comes to layering on prints the key is to get your foundations right. We love to start with a classic, simple print and then layer over a bolder piece. Try starting with our monochrome Marsh Top and its clean stripes. Then, add on our Firefly Dress in the beautiful butterfly print for a clash that perfectly complements. You’ll see how the striped underlayer acts as a neutral rather than competing for attention. Finish with sky-high heeled black ankle boots and keep your hair in a loose low pony to ace the look.

Covet The Clash

Matching prints feels like the obvious choice but, when you mix and clash bold patterns, the result can look so much cooler. Select two prints that don’t share any commonalities and use a neutral item to anchor them. Try wearing our covetable blue and white check Fluture Skirt with our Marianne Corset Top for instant juxtaposition. Wear the Marianne Top over our neutral, navy Wall Top to tie the look together and join all the fashion dots. Wear with barely-there heels and let the clash do all the talking.

Size Matters

When it comes to mixing and matching your prints, one of the easiest ways to master the look is to layer patterns with two different scales of print. Pairing a small-scale print with something larger will see the smaller version acting as more of a neutral. Try our Felicia Jumpsuit with its intricate Camofly Print underneath and layer over our big and beautiful So Puff Coat for instant impact. Wear with chunky black loafers and keep your hair in loose waves for a laid-back feel.

Subtle Touches

For those who feel nervous about embracing the idea of print on print, then accessories are your best friend! Try tying our Camofly Scarf to your handbag and pop the Butterfly Scrunchie in your hair for a cool and connected clash. Want to take it a step further? Why not double up your scrunchies and wear the mini Butterfly and mini Papilio print side by side. Opt for a cute high pony and you’re ready to wow.

Colour Your Look

Whilst the print is important, the colour of each of your pieces is also key to making your look work. Bold patterns in neutral colours like black and white are perfect for offsetting more wild, playful coloured patterns. Try our Lioni turtleneck midi-dress with its monochromatic stripes as a base, then layer over the Kiyo Coat with its multi-coloured patchwork design to make your look pop. Pair with chunky, black platform boots and a dash of black eyeliner and you’re set.
