It’s that time of the year for people from across the country to come home and reunite with their families and loved ones. A big feast is a must in Chinese New Year, as it is believed that having a big meal represents prosperity for the upcoming year. This week, we have created a list, including seven (in our opinion…) best and most luxurious Chinese restaurants to celebrate the holiday in Hong Kong.
1. T’ang Court, The Langham
This restaurant is one of the only five Cantonese restaurants in the world with three Michelin stars. Surrounded by extravagant furnishings, this fine restaurant exudes timeless Tang Dynasty glamour. In 2016, it was listed as one of the “Recommended Rated Restaurants” by Forbes Travel Guide, and “Top 100 Restaurants” by Elite Traveler.
With Chinese New Year fast approaching, Chef Kwong Wai Keung will be launching their Starry Chinese New Year Menu from 5th to 11th February to celebrate the holiday. You will find a range of traditional festive dishes on this special menu, including Sautéed Prawns and Scallops and Braised Dried Abalone with Fish Maw.
2. Ying Jee Club
The name, Ying Jee, symbolises prosperity and success in Chinese. Spearheaded by Executive Chef Siu Hin Chi, the Ying Jee Club exemplifies the highest standard of Cantonese cuisine available, a modern epitome of its kind. This promising restaurant currently holds two Michelin stars and is continuing to strive for the third.
The restaurant’s signatures such as Stir-Fried Sliced Lobster and Pan-Fried Crab Claw filled with shrimp paste, crispy conpoy and caviar topping come in individual portions and are certainly not to be missed out on.
3. Hutong, One Peking
In Beijing, “Hutong” is a colloquial term used to refer to the narrow streets and alleyways since Yuan Dynasty. The Hutong in Hong Kong, while a stunning restaurant in its own right, pays tribute to its etymology with incredible interior decor, mirroring traditional Pekingese alleyways and dated sidewalks. Aside from their authentic yet fun take on Northern Chinese dishes, the view of Victoria Harbour is another highlight of this award-winning restaurant. Enjoy breathtaking fireworks during Chinese New Year’s Eve at one of the window-tables, suitably complimenting their 10-dish signature menu to welcome the new year with your loved ones.
4. Above and Beyond, Hotel Icon
Another high-end Chinese restaurant with a spectacular view is Above and Beyond. Located on the 28th floor of Hotel Icon, this restaurant is no stranger to the splendid view of the Harbour. With their lavish interior decor designed by legendary English designer, Sir Terence Conran, the restaurant has a chic yet romantic ambience which diners would be sure to relish. Commanded by Chef Paul Tsui, the restaurant is famous for their Crispy Chicken, Wok-fried Lobster with Egg White and Black Truffles, Diced Abalone in XO Sauce and Wok-fried Prawns with Tangerine Peel.
5. Peking Garden, Tsim Sha Tsui
Established in 1978, Peking Garden is one of the longest-standing and most well-praised local restaurants that serve authentic Peking Duck. With its famous dishes, such as Peking Duck, Deep-fried Prawns in chilli sauce as well as Deep-fried Fish in sweet & sour sauce, this remarkable restaurant has earned international recognition and has currently expanded to six branches across Hong Kong.
6. Ho Lee Fook
Ho Lee Fook is an inventive Chinese restaurant that aptly drew inspiration from traditional Hong Kong “Cha Chaan Teng”and the spirit of late-night Chinatown hangouts in 1960’s New York.
This unconventional restaurant specialises in serving classic dishes with a modern contemporary twist such as a plate of mom's ‘mostly cabbage, a little bit of pork dumplings' and ChongQing style chicken wings that will challenge your taste buds with fiery SiChuan peppers and aromatic chillies.
7. China Tang, Landmark
Following the late Sir David Tang’s success with the China Tang at the Dorchester, the China Tang at Landmark does not pale in comparison to its London counterpart: quite the contrary, it captures the very essence of Sir David Tang’s opulent taste for fine design, fine food and fine service. After stepping foot into this delicate yet grand modern-day palace, you will be pampered by a well-rounded range of Beijing, Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine carefully curated by Chef Albert Au. To finish off a sumptuous meal, head to its bar to lounge and enjoy some exceptional cocktails.
